Edison Research’s Infinite Dial Report… plus see them at PM18 in Philadelphia

Greetings PM family,

Last week Edison Research & Triton Digital released their annual Infinite Dial report. If you’re unfamiliar with the report, it’s basically the State of the Union for the podcast industry. ‪All kinds of positive news came out of the study, which you can check out the full 2018 Infinite Dial report here.

Podcast Movement was grateful to welcome Edison Research as a part of our opening keynote session this past summer in Anaheim, and we are proud to announce that Edison has agreed to take part once again this year at PM18 in Philadelphia!

We asked Tom Webster (Senior Vice President of Research) if he would be willing to share a few thoughts about the Infinite Dial report released this past week:

By now, many of you have seen the latest Podcast data from the Infinite Dial 2018. We’ve been diligently tracking podcast consumption, and giving that data for free to the podcast community, for over a dozen years now—a period marked by steady, linear growth. We know that there are plenty of stats out there about the podcasting space, but the one thing I can assure you about The Infinite Dial—there are zero compromises in this series, from how we meticulously weight the results by census data to the (ever-growing!) percentage of our sample who are mobile phone-only. We know how many of you rely on these numbers for your media kits and business plans, and we are maybe a little insane relentless about data quality.

The news for the medium this year is good: monthly podcast consumption (the number I pay most attention to) rose from 24% of Americans 12+ to 26%, while the number who say they have ever listened to a podcast grew by 10% (from 40% to 44%.) That’s the good news. And here’s the great news: the average number of podcasts the weekly podcast consumer listens to grew to seven, after being stuck at five for a couple of years.

So, as I put it in the Infinite Dial webinar, both the numerator and the denominator for podcasting have grown, which is resulting in a lot more podcasts being listened to than the prior year. But still, some nagging questions remain. Why is there such a gap between monthly listeners (26%) and those who have ever listened (44%)? Why is there an even greater gap between monthly listeners and those who are at least familiar with the term “podcasting” (64%)? These are crucial questions for this industry to consider, as we all want to grow audience, revenue, and/or both.

We’ve learned some of those answers over the past year with work we have conducted for our private clients. And this July, we want to share a brand new study with you that we have designed specifically for Podcast Movement, to explore these issues definitively. We will once again be bringing you a research presentation that combines quantitative data with video ethnographic research from the keynote stage, and we think this year’s presentation will be essential viewing for anyone involved in podcasting.

And on a personal note, it has been my great privilege to have both served the podcasting community for so many years, and to be a podcaster myself! If you run into me at Podcast Movement, say hi! I’m taller in person than my avatar.

Thanks to Tom for contributing to this week’s newsletter. Give him a shoutout on Twitter, or remember to say hello this summer in Philadelphia!

Announcing the PM18 Scholarship, and revealing the 28 Day Challenge winners

Greetings PM Family,

Today is National Cereal Day! We would be (Grape) Nuts if we didn’t get some Kix by celebrating a Special (K) group of people! Too cheesy? No, we don’t like cheese on our cereal.

Getting to it, today we are pleased to share with you the winners of the first 28 Day Podcast Movement Challenge. If you are not familiar with what this is then we encourage you to check it out here.

The 28 Day Podcast Movement Challenge

The 28 Day Challenge was created to help aspiring podcasters, who had for whatever reason not been able to get their podcasts live, launch their show and embrace the podcaster Life-style during the month of February.

The challenge participants are from literally around the world, and represent a wide variety of backgrounds. Podcast Movement offered 5 fabulous prizes as incentive to anyone who launched their podcast during the challenge, released at least one episode in February, and completed the daily Action Items in the private Facebook community.

We were blown away that 240 people signed up for the challenge, and almost all of them started taking the steps necessary to one day get their podcasts live. Of those 240 who started, 24 of them made it to the finish line and launched their podcast in less than a month!

Announcing the PM18 Scholarship

Podcast Movement was created so that the entire podcast community, worldwide, would have the opportunity to come together each year as a place to call their own. Over the last 5 years we have received hundreds of emails from new and aspiring podcasters who really wanted to attend Podcast Movement, but discovered it too late or were not in a position financially to make it happen.

Podcast Movement is proud to offer an opportunity that has not been available in the prior years. To make the conference more welcoming to new community members, we’re offering a limited number of scholarships to PM18 for upstart podcasters.

What is it and what does it include?

The scholarship is for a Standard Plus pass to Podcast Movement 2018 in Philadelphia, PA from July 23 to July 26. It does not include hotel or transportation, and the pass is not transferable.

Who is eligible?

Brand new, or not yet launch, podcasters who LOVE podcasting and APPRECIATE this community. You must complete the application and have never attended Podcast Movement before. You must also be an active member of the Podcast Movement Community Facebook group.

The scholarships are for podcasters who have never attended a Podcast Movement before, have not yet signed up for PM18, and are not in a position to attend the conference without assistance.

Time for some fresh air (Terry Gross to keynote PM18)!

Greetings PM Family,

This month has been difficult for so many people around the world. We thought it would be a good idea to take this week’s newsletter to get some fresh air. Yes, we encourage everyone to step outside and take a deep breath, but that is not what we mean by Fresh Air.

This week we are celebrating our first keynote speaker announcement for Podcast Movement 2018. We made this announcement originally in Anaheim at PM17, and of course, we are talking about the legendary Terry Gross!

Terry Gross is the host of ‘Fresh Air’ from WHYY-FM. Each week, nearly 5 million people listen to the show’s intimate conversations broadcast on more than 624 NPR stations across the country, as well as in Europe on the World Radio Network. In 2015, Fresh Air was the No. 1 most downloaded show on Apple Podcasts.

Terry has been the host of Fresh Air since 1975 when it was just a local, daily interview and music program in Philadelphia. In 1985, Philadelphia’s WHYY-FM launched a weekly half-hour edition of Fresh Air with Terry Gross, which was distributed nationally by NPR. Since 1987, a daily, one-hour national edition of Fresh Air has been produced by WHYY-FM.

Fresh Air with Terry Gross has received a number of awards, including the prestigious Peabody Award in 1994 for its “probing questions, revelatory interviews, and unusual insight.” America Women in Radio and Television presented Gross with a Gracie Award in 1999 in the category of National Network Radio Personality. In 2003, she received the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s Edward R. Murrow Award for her “outstanding contributions to public radio” and for advancing the “growth, quality and positive image of radio.” In 2007, Gross received the Literarian Award. In 2011, she received the Authors Guild Award for Distinguished Service to the Literary Community.

Terry is very selective on which events that she speakers at, and Podcast Movement is both fortunate and proud to have the opportunity to feature Terry Gross as our closing keynote speaker this July.

Everything ends tonight…when the clock strikes midnight!

  • PM18 Speaking Submissions
You only have a few more hours to submit your presentation for PM18. Do not turn into a pumpkin. Please submit your presentation here before midnight!

If podcasting were an olympic sport…

Greetings PM family,

I (Jared) casually turned on the Winter Olympics (as one does) this week and it just so happened that Curling was on. My wife said, “what is that?…(she laughed)… why are they sweeping the ice?”.

I found myself in a humorous situation, as I’ve seen the sport of Curling before, but have never attempted to explain what it is or how it’s played. It made me realize that I wasn’t sure I really understood the sport myself. If you aren’t familiar with Curling, this 2 minute video is a fun crash course.

Curling does have some interesting facts about it (and then I promise to bring it back to podcasting):

  • Did you know that it started in the 16th century?
  • It became an official Olympic sport in 1998.
  • The sport includes men’s, women’s and mixed doubles.
  • It has its own set of playing gear, strategy and skill.
  • It has also been featured on shows like the Simpsons, movies such as Men with Brooms, and podcasting newsletters such as this.

Podcasting can be similar to Curling in that not everyone understands or appreciates it, but more people around the world are taking notice. This progression puts podcasters in a unique position, because we become Olympic Athletes to a degree… we are Royal Ambassadors.

The world continues to learn about podcasting, as podcast episodes are produced and new innovations improve the medium overall. Podcast Movement is here to help “Olympic Athlete / Royal Ambassadors” like yourself. This edition of the newsletter we will discuss our involvement with the NAB show this April (as we attempt to spread the good word of podcasting to the broadcast community), as well as share some important reminders that you, the podcast Olympiad and diplomat that you are, will not want to ignore.

Podcasters at NAB

What is NAB? NAB is the National Association of Broadcasters, and their largest conference is held every April in Las Vegas. Needless to say, this event is a big deal for that space, and the NAB has graciously invited Podcast Movement to participate at their event this year.

Podcast Movement will be hosting a mixer for Podcasters at their show on Tuesday, April 10 from 5 to 6 pm in Podcast Pavilion (South Upper Hall).

Podcast Movement will also be hosting a session on Wednesday, April 11. We are proud to feature several key members of our community including Addy Saucedo (The Podcast Planner), Alison Melody (The Food Heals Podcast), Erica Mandy (The Newsworthy), Harry Duran (Podcast Junkies) and Rich Jones (Paychecks and Balances).

We would love to have you join us at NAB in Las Vegas this April.

You can use the promo code EP09 and register for a complimentary access pass to Exhibits Only (and still join us at the mixer). Exhibits Only includes all exhibits and all-badges access sessions. All-Badge Sessions are comprised of the Sessions taking place on Main Stage, On-Floor Programs, the Global UHD conference and Exhibitor-Sponsored Programs.

You also have the option to purchase a $100 Conference Pass Flex if you would like to attend the rest of the sessions that NAB has to offer, including ours on the 11th.

Note: Podcast Movement will also host a community meetup on Tuesday, April 10 in Las Vegas. We will have more information on that soon. You can RSVP and get the location specific update here.

Everything ends in a week!

Ding Ding Ding – Sound the Alarm:

  • Only one week left to submit a speaker proposal for Podcast Movement.
Every year we receive emails from saddened community members who accidentally missed the submission deadline. We hate to reply to those emails with gifs of sad trombones and tiny violins, but that is how it is.

Please submit your presentation here before the deadline at the end of the month!

  • One more week to submit nominees for the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame class of 2018.
We first announced this a few weeks ago and did a short write up about it in this edition of the newsletter.

Submit your nominees this week here.

  • One more week until PM18 registration prices go up!
It would be a shame to wait and pay more when you can get in at the lowest available rate this week!

We don’t want you to miss Podcast Movement 2018 in Philadelphia! Register this week.

Podcast Articles, Happenings and Tips

  • One of the most common questions we get is “How do I improve my rankings within Apple Podcasts?” Dan Misener of Pacific Content has some valuable tips.

In San Diego? We’ll see you this Tuesday at our San Diego Meetup – Team PM will be in San Diego for Social Media Marketing World and are hosting a PM community meetup on Tuesday evening, February 27 from 7pm to 10pm PT. Please make plans to join us if you are in the area!

In closing, we thought it would be appropriate to share a dad joke about curling.

Q: Why should you get your children into curling?
A: It’s the only way to get them to sweep the house.

No? A little humor… very little. Remember… you are an Ambassador!

Podcast Movement celebrates Black History Month…our Valentine’s Day Special

Greetings PM Family, and Happy Valentine’s Day!

Today we’re celebrating Black History Month by showing love to a few of our Podcast Movement community’s podcasts of color. These podcasts focus on a broad range of subjects, from sports to politics, and from business to self development.

We teamed up with Stephen A. Hart of the Trailblazers.FM podcast to explore a few of the podcasts that challenge, inform and project some much needed voices and topics into the world. We’re also excited for Stephen, as he and a few other podcasters in our community were recently featured on Apple Podcasts main page for Black History Month!

We are proud to highlight some podcasters from our community and celebrate their powerful and creative works in this week’s newsletter.

Alex Elle (hey, girl.) – hey, girl. unites the voices of phenomenal women near and far. Created with sisterhood and storytelling in mind, author Alex Elle sits down with people who inspire her. From friends to family members and strangers, the hey, girl. guests give us a peek into their stories through candid and intimate conversations.

Cole Johnson (the Cole Sportz) – Cole loves sports information. His weekly podcast intersects news, comedy, politics, entertainment, and intellect in the sports world.

Kwame Christian (Negotiate Anything) – Kwame is a business lawyer and is passionate about teaching business professionals how to negotiate and be more persuasive. His podcast Negotiate Anything is the top ranked podcast in the U.S. on the topic of negotiations.

Jas Hands (Brown Liquor Report) – Jas and her co-hosts’ podcast was birthed at the intersection of friends reuniting over heated and humorous discussion about politics and pop culture, chicken and liquor. It has quickly evolved, and has emerged as a unique voice for Generation Xers who find themselves straddling ratchet and responsibility.

Eghe Lenze (Welcome to the Hood) – Eghe is based in Indianapolis, IN and is a wonderful contributor to our community. She is a special exception to our list because she hasn’t quite started her podcast on parenting yet, but is a member of the 28 Day Challenge and is planning to launch at the end of the month!

Michelle Jackson (Michelle is Money Hungry) – Michelle is a personal finance blogger who is unapologetically money hungry, because being broke sucks. But, she’s not talking about being greedy. She’s talking about being financially mindful-one decision at a time.

Ebony Louis (The Laundry Room Podcast) – Ebony recently launched The Laundry Room Podcast with her bestie Judy Vu. They discuss truth and adventure in everyday situations. Telling it all in hopes to inspire others to “live your truth”. Ebony also is the co-author of the new book The Perspective of the Cheater and The Cheated.

Civilla Morgan (Childless Not By Choice) – Civilla Morgan created a community and a place of understanding for men and women who are childless, not by choice. This community can often be misunderstood or ignored by society. Civilla aims to change that by treating others with understanding, empathy and grace.

Judithe Registre (The Get InPowered Podcast) – Judithe’s podcast is about individuals, innovators, advocates, activists, and agents of social change across sectors and industries who are working to transform their communities and the world at large. These are people who, through their own personal experiences and a gender equity lens, are working to create more inclusive and progressive communities.

Chris Jones (Ready Write Launch– Chris has always loved books. He helps writers at any stage learn how to write more efficiently and market, promote, and sell their work effectively. Chris is determined to bring his audience inspiring interviews with writers, authors, and professionals who influence the writing world, as well as informational shows to help navigate through the writing life.

Bre Mitchell (Eff the Cubicle) – Bre is based in Los Angeles, CA. She has a passion for helping single moms that are serious about starting and growing a successful side-hustle. Bre loves podcasting and is an awesome supporter of Podcast Movement.

Engel Jones (12 Minute Convos) – Engel is from Trinidad and Tobago. He has had over 1700 twelve minute podcast episode conversations with all types of professionals! Engel loves helping others with their personal brand, but even more so, he loves to share the power of conversation.

Alexis Parris (Empowered Millennial Podcast) – Alexis knows how to stand out. She may be only 21 years old, but her experiences and natural charisma have given her a unique platform to globally impact youth. She does this by teaching personal development principles and help young leaders create their best life in the process.

Prince Bre (Power Not Pity) – Bri. M explores the lives of disabled people of color everywhere. Through storytelling, commentary and analysis, the podcast aims to amplify the lived experiences and perspectives of disabled people. It also uncovers their disable power.

Emmitt Muckles (Billionaire Lifestyle Podcast) – Emmitt deeply cares about the well-being of others. His podcast shares conversations with people who are working toward their dreams or have information to enhance your life. Mixed in with topics for your soul.

Sonia Thompson (The Customer Magnet Show) – Sonia is an author, world traveler, business coach and host of the Customer Magnet Show. We have watched Sonia “grow up” in a sense over the last several years. We couldn’t be more proud of her accomplishments on her podcast and in life!

Jonathan Mitchell Dixon (Black Boy Blitz) – Jonathan started the Black Boy Blitz to explore lives of black/brown men, and allow the world to know their voices and the ideas. The show also discusses boyhood/manhood/fatherhood, toxic masculinity, and topics of various fields, as well as their take on all kinds of affairs.

Rana Campbell (Dreams in Drive) – Rana hosts a podcast geared towards creatives & lifestyle entrepreneurs who want to learn how to take their dreams out of PARK and into DRIVE. They chat with successful creative and lifestyle entrepreneurs who will share their personal dream driving stories and the keys to success that have helped them along the way.

Gregg Clunis (Tiny Leaps, Big Changes) – Gregg hosts a self-help podcast about the day-to-day behaviors that everyone engages in that determine the results we gain in our lives. Gregg shares simple personal development strategies you can use as well as the habits you can develop to get the most out of your life.

Jamila Souffrant (Journey To Launch) – Jamila and her husband saved $85,300 over 12 months, and her podcast helps others eliminate debt, save more money and increase their net worth.

Kito Delgado (Get on the Box) – Kito’s podcast is a platform for individuals to share their personal narrative. “Main Characters” of the show share their “GOTB moment” that inspired them to take action on their big ideas. Kito is doing a monthlong series celebrating Black History Month by releasing 2 episodes per week throughout February.

Thanks to Stephen for helping us recognize these amazing podcasters, and members of the Podcast Movement Community. Would you be willing to share some Valentine’s Day love and congratulate those mentioned in this week’s newsletter?

Exciting things are coming to Podcast Movement this summer

Happy hump day Podcast Movement family,

First off, congratulations to the Philadelphia Eagles fans in our group. And whether the team you were pulling for won or lost (or even if you don’t care at all), Philadelphia is a winner, as Podcast Movement is coming to town this summer!

While we try not to make the newsletter only about Podcast Movement, this week we couldn’t help ourselves. We’ve been working hard in our offseason to put some exciting new features and additions in place, and this week we wanted to share two of those with you.

Relaxation and Recreation “Midway”

While we know most people come to Podcast Movement to learn and network, sometimes you just want to cut loose (or get lost)! For that, we offer you the Podcast Movement Midway.

Featuring arcade games, cornhole, and even air hockey, the Midway will be a fun gathering point to enjoy not only some time outside of the sessions, but also a place to hang out with old and new friends alike!

So put “stop by the Midway” on your to-do list for Podcast Movement, and come and go as you wish!

Dedicated Track Stages

A few weeks ago we let you know about some of the awesome session tracks that we have in the works, and now we’re excited to announce that we’ve taken a step to make sure that these tracks are easy to find, and easy to participate in!

For the first year ever, each track will have a dedicated stage. This means every session, all three days, on each of these six stages will have sessions dedicated to their designated track.

Looking to go to only sessions about monetization or marketing? There are stages for that. Looking to mix it up and check out a technical session, but not be confused by the volume of sessions taking place at once? Head to the Technical Stage and learn away!

Every year we’ve looked for ways to make participating in the sessions as easy as possible, and we’re excited for this step in the evolution of this goal!

Check out this year’s tracks, and start making plans to check out the sessions that are right for you!

Convince the Boss to send you to PM18

We get lots of people who come to PM each summer to try and learn new skills that could be applicable at their job. Each year more and more people ask us to put something together for them to try to pitch their employer on the benefits of attending Podcast Movement.

So we’re excited to present a template that you can use to share with your boss the benefits of joining us this summer. Check out the document here.

Podcast Articles, Happenings and Tips

  • PM17 Keynote Speaker and host of Lore, Aaron Mahnke recently put together what he describes as 10 Super Sassy Podcasting Tips. Aaron certainly knows a thing or two about creating a successful show, so this list is probably worth your time.
  • We know that podcast advertising is as lucrative as creators and advertisers alike had hoped for the big shows and networks. However, where is the love for the smaller podcasts? RadioPublic, the for-profit spinoff of public radio marketplace PRX, knows smaller podcasters are being shut out as the industry grows, which is why its new Paid Listens program will guarantee payments to podcasters on RadioPublic, regardless of their audience size.
  • The awesome crew over at Bello Collective have deemed February 6 (yesterday) “International ‘Review Your Favorite Podcast and Support the Makers of Things That Bring You Joy’ day”. We support supporting creators, so check out their article and join the good cause!
  • Our friends at SpareMin (a social video editing tool for podcasters) are giving away an “Ultimate Podcast Starter Kit”, where the winner will receive over $800 in podcasting goodies, including a ticket to Podcast Movement, a mic and headphones, podcast hosting, customized cover art, voice over and editing for your podcast, and more. Check out the contest, and enter here.

Don’t miss out on any of the fun taking place at the PM Midway, or the learning on our dedicated track stages!

Register for Podcast Movement during our Early Bird Sale, and don’t miss any of the fun.

Community Milestone Celebrations

We try to regularly celebrate milestones in the Podcast Movement Facebook community. Here is a short list of community members who are celebrating cool wins for their show. Please share your milestone here.

“I’ve interviewed 500 women for my podcast!” – Sheena Yap Chan (The Tao of Self Confidence)

“We just launched our new podcast and are getting way more notice and positive feedback than expected. Seems like we stuck a nerve.” – Jamie Slingerland (Entrepreneurial Family Man Podcast)

“We recently celebrated our 400th episode on Outlier On Air. We had Andy Weir, NYT Best-Selling Author of The Martian and Artemis.” – Ever Gonzalez (Outlier On Air)

Hall of Fame Nominations are now open…plus a big HOF Announcement!

We have some exciting announcements in this week’s edition of the newsletter. We will discuss the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame nominations being open, let you know how to nominate your favorite podcast legends, and reveal big news regarding this year’s Hall of Fame Ceremony!

Podcasters Hall of Fame

The Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame was started in 2015 to honor those who paved the way for podcasters, and the podcast industry, of today. Since then, we’ve inducted nearly 20 individuals into the hall, and 2018 we will continue this tradition.

We asked 2016 Hall of Fame inductee Mignon Fogarty (aka. Grammar Girl) to share her thoughts on what being inducted into the Hall of Fame meant to her.

Grammar Girl Hall of Fame

“Being part of the podcasting community is one of the things I have loved about podcasting since the very beginning, so to be honored for both my early contributions to the community and my ongoing podcast quality means the world to me. This honor is right up there with my book making the New York Times bestseller list for me.” – Mignon Fogarty (Grammar Girl)

HOF Nominations are Open Now

You, the podcast community, play a meaningful role in who will be inducted into this year’s Hall of Fame class of 2018. We invite you to nominate your picks for this year’s class, who must all meet a short set of criteria. Anyone who is eligible for nomination must:

  1. Have been involved with podcasting for at least 10 years, either as a podcaster or an active member of the podcast industry.
  2. Have promoted the art of podcasting over those 10 years.
  3. Done things to make podcasting better off because of their contributions and involvement.
  4. Be thought of highly by their podcasting peers.

Have someone awesome in mind? You can nominate a podcaster by using THIS FORM.

Once the nominations occur, every nominee will be evaluated during a selection process made up of existing Hall of Famers. The top nominees will then be announced as the 2018 Class of the Podcasters Hall of Fame, and be inducted this July at our Hall of Fame Ceremony.

Podcast Hall of Fame to be honored in their own ceremony this summer

We are pleased to announce that this year, the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame Ceremony will occur as its own celebration, separate from the awards show. The Hall of Fame class will be acknowledged at the awards show on July 24, but the actual inductions will happen Monday evening, July 23 at 7pm during a formal ceremony.

This invite-only ceremony will welcome all inductees with their guests, as well as all past inductees, with a limited number of tickets available to the public.

This new, exciting format allows the inductees the proper time to honor their moment. We are thrilled with this evolution, and look forward to celebrating the Hall of Fame inductees on Monday night, and the Award recipients on Tuesday night, through this new approach!

Consider this newsletter to be your fairy godmother. Picture Dan Franks with gray hair, in a blue cloak, waving a magic wand and singing Bippity Boppity Boo. You have now been warned.

Delicious lessons that podcasters can learn from Girl Scouts

Greetings PM family,

It is that magical time of year. You know… that time of year between New Year’s and Valentine’s Day. It could be considered somewhat of a down time between major holidays, but it is all about perspective.

This past Saturday, I (Jared) took my 7-year-old daughter and her friend to a local playground. When we were walking up to the playground ready to have fun and check out all that this particular location had to offer, we were approached by 4 little girls in uniform. The girls represented Girl Scout Troop 10536 and they were on a mission. Their mission was to sell boxes of Girl Scout Cookies.

The Girl Scout Cookie sales experience can be a learning one for a few reasons.

First of all, the excitement that the cookies are back after such a long hiatus has most people excited. The scarcity has temporarily ended!

Also, seeing little girls hustle to raise money for their troop and other worthy causes is admirable. Who doesn’t want to support that in some shape or form? It is not uncommon to see people that may not have a desire to buy Girl Scout Cookies give in and purchase a box simply because they don’t want to say no, and possibly discourage the girls that are working so hard.

What can Podcasters learn from Girl Scout Cookies? We put together a few ideas from the overall Girl Scout Cookie experience that podcasters can relate to.

1) Anticipation

Girl Scout Cookie season is a great example of how to build anticipation. When we’re “in season”, people talk about Girl Scout Cookies with their friends, family, and neighbors. How can your podcast (or upcoming podcast launch) create anticipation like we see with Girl Scout Cookies?

It may be as simple as using specific episode artwork (check out this awesome post from Lauren Selfridge), or teasing the episodes through social media posts. Civilla Morgan will do a Facebook Live the day before a new episode. It gives her a chance not only to talk about the episode but also to talk about other things that are going on. Luke Scorziell will create polls on Twitter about the topic of the episode. Kito Delgado prefers to tease an episode using Instagram Story. Check out more ideas.

At Podcast Movement, we have the built-in seasonality that allows us to ramp up every summer, as podcasters get excited to come together as a community to learn and enjoy fellowship with each other. What do you do to build excitement for your podcast?

2) Community

The Girl Scouts in our local area are smart. They team up and stand outside of popular places such as the grocery store, and talk to everyone that walks in and out. The cookie sales are the individual’s responsibility, but the teamwork helps to create the “rising tide lifts all the boats” scenario for each girl to sell more boxes.

Did you know that Danny Pena from Gamertag Radio and his co-hosts would go to their local video game stores during popular video game releases, and talk to patrons in the store about the GTR podcast? Their teamwork helped get the word out about the show using the “tell everyone in gaming” strategy, and it compounded over the years to playe a massive part of the success that they enjoy today.

When is the last time that you and some supporters went to a place where your target listeners were hanging out so that you could talk to them in person about your podcast through natural conversation?

The visibility of a community tends to create a social dynamic that makes it much easier for your target listeners to agree to check out your show. What are some ways to grow your own community? Consider checking out this podcast episode.

3) Accessibility

The Girl Scouts make it pretty easy to get cookies. They come to you, but if you aren’t ready, willing or capable of getting cookies at that time, you still have options to get them later. You can order them through the website of the girl that you know, or find cookies through the Girl Scout Cookie Finder app!

Podcasters have the option to have their podcasts available on different platforms for discoverability. This continues to grow each year. Many new podcasters launch their show on Apple Podcasts (formerly iTunes) and Stitcher Radio. That said, is your show on Spotify? Is your show available on Amazon Alexa? Can your podcast be easily found on Android devices? What about Google Play or iHeart Radio?

One new option that we’re enjoying is Podbile, and what we like most about Podible is they are creator first! In fact, they have a contest for podcasters going on now that you should check out to help improve your accessibility.

4) Hustle is Rewarded

We mentioned this earlier, but it is worth taking note. Many people will buy cookies from Girl Scouts whether they actually like the cookies or not, simply because they want to reward the girls that are working hard and hustling. Hustle is admired and respected. It is easy to sit back and do nothing, but it takes a lot more effort to get up and make something happen.

As podcasters, this reminds us that it is ultimately up to you to not only record the best content possible, but to also tell the world about it. In most cases, no one else will do this for you, but you can rarely hit big download numbers and gain listeners without asking people to check out your show.

Top podcasters are organized. These podcasters plan ahead for the best content that they can deliver. They never leave their episodes to chance once they are published. They go the extra mile to tell as many of their target listeners about it that they can through word of mouth, social media, paid ads (if budget allows), guesting on other podcasts, cross promotion with other podcasters, and the list goes on.

What can you do to continue to go the extra mile for your show? Do you need a better audio setup? Perhaps the answer is being more consistent with your release schedule. Perhaps it is getting more feedback from friends and listeners to continue to improve the content of the episodes. Maybe you need to engage more with an existing community of podcasters to get more ideas and inspiration. Perhaps you could benefit from making the investment to come to Philadelphia this summer to learn and connect with the best podcasters and companies in the industry.

The Podcast Movement community (like the Girl Scouts) is available and diligent. We like to help each other do better. We cannot do the work for you, but we can share ideas and encourage one another when someone is stuck. At the end of the day, like Girl Scout Cookies, we think that opportunity is pretty sweet and worth sharing!

Bring your kids to Podcast Movement in Philly

We are excited to announce that this year, with the encouragement and requests from you all, we will finally be offering conference-day childcare services for anyone whose children are coming to the conference. Podcast Articles, Happenings and Tips

  • New surveys from NPR and Edison Research confirm continued and rapid increases in ownership of voice-activated smart speakers, and reinforce the increasing impact these devices are having on consumer behavior across a variety of technologies and platforms. One-in-six Americans now has a Smart Speaker (16%), up 128% since January 2017 according to a nationally representative telephone survey of 1,010 persons ages 18 and older fielded after Christmas 2017. What does this mean for the podcast community?
  • In a conversation with Podcast Movement 2018’s closing keynote speaker: Fresh Air host Terry Gross discusses the art of the Q&A, the guest that most surprised her, and how she salvages a tanking interview.
  • Harry Leslie Smith is almost 95 years old. He is also the host of Harry’s Last Stand, which is a podcast that is attempting to sound the alarm bell about the rise of global fascism and the collapse of the welfare state. We hope that we are podcasting when we are 95.

New PM18 Session Track Announcement!

Greetings PM family,

This week’s newsletter kicks off with a big PM18 announcement. We are thrilled to introduce a new track to our session offerings starting this year in Philadelphia. One of our goals when we held the first PM in 2014 was to be an event for the community, and we think this new track reflects that not only in the content it will cover, but in the way the idea came about!

The suggestion for this new category came from one of the most respected members of the podcast community, Podcast Hall of Famer Elsie Escobar. We asked Elsie if she would be willing to share some of the backstory and heart behind her encouraging us to add this track.

Every year, the conversation about the podcasting industry expands.

Mainstream media continues to pay attention.

Public media recognizes its power to re-ignite a stagnant industry through podcasting.

Money is being poured into emerging companies that are looking to shake things up in the space.

Existing media companies are adding serious support to podcasts.

Premium newsletters, blogs, Medium articles, and more continue to cover the podcasting space, but something is still missing.

The root of podcasting is in its continued impact on society, culture and new media and its ability to give a voice to those that are often left voiceless.

As podcasting matures, the industry is ready, and has been prepared to bring forward more impactful conversations beyond discussing:

  • How to make a podcast?
  • What gear do you need?
  • How do you get more listeners?
  • What are the viable business models?

But more importantly, the Podcasting Industry can handle expanding the conversation beyond advertising and new ways to measure downloads.

That is not to say that the above subjects are not relevant. They are and will continue to be, but it’s time to strengthen the conversation.

Podcasters have a history of being culture shifters, change makers, fringe dwellers, and risk takers. There is a wealth of podcasts out there that have had a massive impact on society, culture, inclusion, diversity and creating communities of belonging.

This year, Podcast Movement leads the industry by offering the opportunity to podcasters whose work is heavily embedded in social and cultural topics, serving underrepresented populations and to those addressing social justice issues through podcasting by adding another session track: Society, Culture & Advocacy!

For those of you that know first hand the power of podcasting through the content of your show, how it’s created access for those that often aren’t being heard, the power of communities of inclusion and belonging, share your wisdom with the Podcasting Industry.

Your expertise is necessary! Apply to speak today.

To hear more from Elsie, check her out on She Podcasts and Libsyn’s The Feed.

Podcast Articles, Happenings and Tips

  • Are you a podcaster looking for guests, or looking to be a guest on other shows? If so, please review and comment on this post in our FB group!
  • The ABC television network has a new comedy series about podcasting that is loosely based on the story of Alex Blumberg’s creation of Gimlet Media (as shared in Season 1 of the podcast Startup). The trailer for Alex, Inc is funny, so definitely check it out if you need a laugh.
  • Pandora launched its Apple Music competitor last spring. Now it sounds like building the “podcast genome project”, and helping podcasters monetize their shows more easily is next on their radar!
  • For community members Seth Resler’s podcast, he uses a number of production elements — called “sweepers” in the radio industry — to separate segments. If you’ve ever wondered how you make these types of production elements, here are his examples.
  • Tell Buzzfeed about the podcasts that you absolutely love and want others to listen to (aka. have a listener or buddy recommend your show), and it might be featured in their 2018 BuzzFeed podcast list.

Podcast Movement is for the community, and if you’re getting this, you’re included. Secure your place at PM with the Super Early Bird Discount Registration Sale, going on now.

We encourage you to consider submitting a presentation for PM18 in Philadelphia if you haven’t already! Also, remember to invite a friend that is interested in starting a podcast to join the free 28 Day Challenge starting on Feb 1.

Until next week,

Six Lessons for Podcasters

Podcast Movement’s hope is that this piece will not be interpreted as comparing a podcast to the civil rights struggle that Dr. King fought for. Our desire is to honor Dr. King’s legacy in the best way we know how: by inspiring and encouraging today’s thought leaders to share their message around the world.

Greetings PM family,

Monday, January 15 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the US. This coming week we celebrate his life and achievements, and also try to take the lessons he taught and relate them to our daily lives today. This made us wonder what this profound and courageous leader would say to the podcast community if he were still living in 2018. While we can unfortunately only speculate, his life and legacy do give us perspective on what he valued that is still relevant today. We put together a short list of advice that we believe Dr. Martin Luther King Jr would share with today’s podcast community.

Liberty

It is no secret that Dr. King valued freedom, so much so that he was willing to successfully fight for it in the form of using the tactics of nonviolence and civil disobedience. Podcasting provides freedom to share your voice. It has the potential to foster a media landscape that lifts up the hidden stories and absent narratives of our diverse society. It gives the power of voice to all communities, and provides an open and accessible platform for innovation that can serve democracy’s future generations.

We are confident that Dr. King would love this form of new media. As a medium where the average individuals voice and views can be widely shared, we imagine that Dr. King would encourage all to use podcasting as a way to stand up for their convictions, and allow their messages to be heard by the masses. Podcasting is not just for a select few, it’s an outlet for anyone with a passion to freely express themselves.

Public Speaking

Dr. King wrote over 5 books, and delivered up to 450 speeches each year. His most famous speech was “I Have a Dream”. It is clear that Dr. King valued public speaking, and leveraged it to help launch the civil rights movement. Podcast Movement offers the opportunity every year for podcasters to share their knowledge and expertise through our open speaker submission process.

We are proud to announce that we are now accepting applications to speak at Podcast Movement 2018. If you’re interested in speaking at this year’s conference, we encourage you to put your best foot forward, and submit your ideas for a possible breakout session or panel at this year’s Podcast Movement.

Last year we had over 500 submissions, and only 50 were selected. This year will be no different. Since it is impossible for every submission to take the stage this year in Philadelphia, we want to remind you to take your time to put together your best submission. If you want to learn more about this process, and submit your presentation to PM18…you can do it here.

Embrace Challenges

Dr. King once said, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” —from Strength to Love, 1963. Podcasting is not always easy. It isn’t easy to launch a show. It isn’t easy to edit. It isn’t easy to grow an audience. Dr. King would encourage podcasters to persevere through these challenges and continue to share what we are compelled to share.

Podcast Movement is kicking off the 28 Day Launch Your Podcast Challenge on February 1st. If you have been on the fence about starting a podcast (or have a friend who is wanting to launch)… we encourage you to join this free challenge. This opportunity not only provides bite-size baby steps each day toward launching your podcast, but also features a community element that allows every participant to share their journey and get feedback.

And did we mention that there will be fiver winners who will get free tickets to Podcast Movement, and the grand prize winner receives an all expenses paid trip to Philadelphia?

We invite you to learn more, and join the challenge: PodcastMovement.com/challenge

Serve Your Audience

“Everybody can be great … because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” —“The Drum Major Instinct,” Ebenezer Baptist Church, Atlanta, GA, February 4, 1968.

This quote resonates with us as podcasters for a number of reasons, but the biggest reason is because it puts the servant mindset first. If you aren’t sure how you can best serve your audience, we encourage you to ask them. You can do this by sending a message through your e-mail list, creating a survey, or simply asking some of your listeners what their interests and challenges are, and finding unique ways through the podcast to address them.

Continued Learning

In “The Purpose of Education” from Morehouse College student newspaper, The Maroon Tiger (1947), Dr. King said, “Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education.” We know that he valued continued learning, and believe that he would encourage podcasters to continue building their knowledge and experience with podcasting.

One excellent way to do this is to commit to being involved in the podcast communities, one example being our Podcast Community Facebook Group. The group members share insights that are valuable and timely, plus it is a wide open forum to ask questions to your peers. Another way is to come together in-person with your fellow podcasting brothers and sisters at Podcast Movement in Philadelphia this July! Seriously, this event is a must attend every year, and most people will tell you their favorite part of the event is that it is the only time of the year that so many fellow podcasters gather in one place.

Be the Best that You can Be

“Be a bush if you can’t be a tree. If you can’t be a highway, just be a trail. If you can’t be a sun, be a star. For it isn’t by size that you win or fail. Be the best of whatever you are.” —from a speech before a group of students at Barratt Junior High School in Philadelphia, October 26, 1967.

Whether you are new to podcasting, or have been a podcaster for over 15 years, we can always continue to improve! It is a new year, and that means a new opportunity to put your best foot forward. Podcast Movement, and the PM Community, are here to help you!

What advice do you think Dr. King would share with podcasters? Please feel to share your thoughts with the Facebook group.
