The first season follows the case of the disappearance of 12-year-old Johnny Gosch in 1982, a case that she first began researching one year prior, and has become close to her heart. In April, she also created “SWANCAST,” a biweekly show highlighting the talented women of SWAN Day Connecticut. SWAN stands for Support Women Artists Now and it is a global movement. Connecticut’s annual celebrations showcase female fronted bands, female visual artists, even burlesque dancers.

Tyler Bell – Westside Fairytales

Tyler was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, at the ass end of the 1980s. St. Judes Catholic School got rid of him by sixth grade and he came up in the public school system with the lions share of his generation. His childhood was a lot of hand-me-downs and hard work, of doing whether or not you wanted to and going back out to fight even if you were scared.

And he read. Lots. And thought about writing his own books.

The towers falling on 9/11 changed his plans for his future just about as much as anybody else in that era. And, five years after watching thousands die live in his freshman typing class, Tyler was clapped up in body armor with Second Battalion, Eighth Marines outside of Fallujah. He did three combat deployments with the Marines as an infantry 0331 and rejoined society drunk, angry, and pissed off about being alive when other people weren’t.

Writing saved his life. He started with journalism in college and found himself suddenly drinking less and going out more, wanting to know about people. He could feel the world through their stories, through the scrawls they left on the inside of his skull, more than he could feel using his own skin. He found the shards of the person he could become inside others, and slowly, painstakingly put himself back together.

He caught the itch soon after and started writing for himself, doing whatever he could to commit the stories he couldn’t write the news to paper. Stories too grotesque or banally cruel for publication. The true lives of the blue collar folk he’d grown up alongside — folks the world just always seemed ready to write off and forget — he wrote about them.

Leigh is a museum worker by day, queer history aficionado and podcaster by night/any spare time they get. They love telling stories about badass folks from history and present who dare to live authentically and add light and love to the world. They have a degree in European History and Theater, and wrote their thesis on ascetic medieval women and all the ways they messed with the patriarchy, and flirted for a long time with slapping on an archaeology degree as well, because why not! Bones, yo. They’re so neat. Now, they can usually be seen frantically running around craft stores working on cosplays, spending entirely way too much money at comic conventions, and muttering obscenities under breath at Adobe Premiere Pro while honing video editing skills. And usually consuming more Netflix than is probably healthy. Likes: seeing hopeful and representative stories reflected in media, new comic book Wednesdays, also tea, petting all the dogs, and their bed. Dislikes: cisheteronormativity, the patriarchy, and the word moist.

There’s nothing like the live stage

Greetings PM Family,

It is no secret that we love what happens live on stages! We always have. Whether it’s enjoying an episode of Saturday Night Live, or watching a local high school play, the live element often creates a memory that you never forget. It could be attending a concert, or rewatching a video from an infamous moment such as the Beatles performing on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964…live moments on stages are something that we celebrate, and one more reason why we love in-person events!

This year on the Podcast Movement stages: something new.

We’ve always had different “tracks” of sessions to choose from, depending on your area of interest. However this year we’ve made it even easier to find the sessions most relevant to you, and immerse yourself as much (or as little) in those specific topics as you’d like!

Rare Occurrence
James Cridland from Podnews recently discovered a company that you can pay to get you to the top of Apple Podcasts. We agree that the “pay to game the system” strategy is a losing one. Christie Wheeler – Underwhelmed

In the Summer of 2017, best friends and sorority sisters, Christie Wheeler and Nicole Kokinos, decided to start a podcast centered around the ridiculousness and hilarity that has ensued during their everyday lives working in mediocre jobs (Recruiter and Teacher accordingly) in the mediocre cities of Richmond, VA and Baltimore, MD. They decided to name this masterpiece Underwhelmed.

One half of the self proclaimed dynamic duo, Christie, is also a mom to the highly energetic, funny, and most adorable toddler in all the land, Madeline. Madeline recently made her podcast debut during Episode 29, however, she didn’t have much to say at the time.

Aside from being a cool mom while hanging out with Madeline, Christie also enjoys spending time with her husband, Kevin, and dog, Galileo. When she can find time she enjoys exercising and cooking, and she loves watching Dateline, comedy specials, and anything Bravo. I guess you could just call her Basic.

Although being a full time working mom and podcaster can be exhausting at times, Christie wouldn’t change it for the world. She has loved every moment of her podcast journey and all the extra time she has gotten to spend with Nicole while they work on their “craft”.

Podcast Movement’s got talent!

The “Got Talent” franchise is a global reality television series watched by millions of people around the world. It features the world’s most talented (but not yet famous) performers: singers, dancers, magicians, comedians and more. They perform for celebrity judges, competing to win a life-changing prize, as well as viewers’ hearts.

Podcast Movement’s got talent as well! Every year the speaker lineup gets better. Every year the exhibitors, workshops, meetups and networking events gets better.

Similar to the Got Talent franchise, Podcast Movement strongly believes in giving podcasters a chance to bring their A-game. We do this every year by offering an open speaker submission process, plus providing additional speaking events such as Ignite.

We even made events like PMx and the Academy of Podcasters Awards free to the public, so local podcasters not attending the rest of Podcast Movement could still participate! And we’re always evolving to continue to provide opportunities to members of the community, which leads us to…

And the winners are…

In 2018, Podcast Movement launched a new scholarship program to give a deserving few new podcasters, who are not able to afford to attend on their own, the opportunity to win a scholarship to attend the full event in Philadelphia, and act as brand ambassadors for PM18.

We had nearly 100 podcasters send us their scholarship applications, but like what happens on Got Talent, most unfortunately received the Big Red “X”, as we could only choose 6 scholarship recipients. That said – it’s time to announce the “auditions” that made it through to Philadelphia.

Betsy Cardenas – The Currently
Catherine Hefferan – Happy Soup Podcast
Laala Matias – LAaLALand Alert!!
Laura Gee – fitT1Dfoodie Life With Diabetes
Melinda Hasbrouck – Couch Sessions with Melinda Hasbrouck

The Backwards Edition of the Podcast Movement Newsletter

We heard that it is okay to change things up from time to time. Some interview podcasters like to bring on a guest host, and turn themselves into the guest. PM co-founder Dan Franks likes to wear his baseball hats “catcher” style, on occasion.

These types of choices brought inspiration to allow the theme for this week’s newsletter to completely change directions! So put your clothes on backwards, queue up some Kris Kross’ Jump Jump to play in the background and lets put this sweet ride (figuratively) in reverse!

Things you should:

Moonwalk to – Spotify will be hosting a week-long intensive program for aspiring female podcasters of color. They are covering all expenses of the five-day workshop, including travel to New York City, six nights of hotel and meal vouchers for breakfast and lunch. The ten finalists will then have the opportunity to pitch their podcasts, with the top three landing their pilot, funded up to $10,000. Please consider sharing this with any podcasters or prospective podcasters that qualify. The deadline for the application is April 10.

Have on your radar (radar spelled backwards is radar) – The Podcast Movement 28 Day Challenge is coming back on May 1. If creating a podcast is on your radar (or a friends) then please sign up, remember to mark you calendars. We will share more on this soon!

Backflip into – We’ll be in Las Vegas NEXT WEEK for NAB, and we’re having a big Podcast Movement meetup Tuesday Night. Find all the details here.

Reverse Engineer – Andy Barker from the Throwing Down with Andy & Ricardo podcast was using a card table for the last year and a half as a “podcast desk.” It worked, but it was less than ideal. He decided to reach out to his handy woodworking friend to create a custom Podcast desk. They filmed the making of this beauty. You have to check this out!

We thought it would be appropriate to count-down some new speaker announcements for PM18! As Missy Elliott would say … let’s put this list down, flip it and reverse it (Ti esrever dna ti pilf, nwod gniht ym tup … sp?)

Podcast Movement: Spring Break Edition (who is bringing the hula hoop?)

You’ve probably heard of Spring Training, Spring Cleaning or maybe you have been called a Spring Chicken in your day.

Spring is one of our favorite times of year — a season of beginnings and growth — and an ideal time for a fun break between what can be a pricey winter quarter, and the busy summer months.

Whether you’ve already had a traditional Spring Break trip by traveling somewhere warm, enjoyed a staycation alternative or took a full 30 minutes for lunch at work… we thought that it would be appropriate to enjoy Spring Break in this week’s edition of the newsletter.

When you get ready for a vacation on Spring Break, you make a list of things to pack and prepare. So for our spring break newsletter, we decided to share our newest speaker announcements AND give you a list of things to learn from them at PM18. Because the sand may brush off, the salt may wash away, and tans will fade, but the learnings and connections from PM18 will last forever.

For those who aren’t familiar with us, we’re a modern, independent media company that aims to create the future of journalism and entertainment through our authoritative editorial networks, commitment to developing standout technology, and high-fidelity advertising.

The Vox Media Podcast Network specifically is where curiosity meets conversation. Everyday, we produce a slate of premium audio programming featuring industry-leading talent for global audiences across genres.

As the marketing lead for podcasts, my job is to grow our business by helping people discover our shows and engage with our hosts and community.
