Edison Research Keynote at PM19

For many of the attendees at Podcast Movement, podcasting is just second nature. We’ve grown up with the idea of what a podcast is, and what it can be. But millions of people have recently discovered podcasting, and the concept of a podcast is very different to them.

Join Edison Research SVP Tom Webster for a brand new research presentation on the differences between podcast listeners – the rookies and the vets.

We have been fortunate to watch Patrice go from attending Podcast Movement two years ago in Anaheim, to launching her podcast, and then returning as a breakout speaker the following year in Philadelphia. Patrice’s show continues to grow and have an impact on her listeners all over the world!

It is a huge honor for Podcast Movement to welcome Patrice to the main stage. She embodies the overall spirit of podcasting through her diligence, resilience, hard work, and treating others well.

Ignite – It’s not too late to submit to speak!

PM19 is proud to have Ignite, presented by Freshbooks, return for a 3rd year with host Eric Rosenburg.

Ignite is a unique speaking event where a series of speakers get on stage for five minutes each to share a Spark. A Spark is a 5-minute talk that consists of 20 slides. Each slide is on a 15-second auto advance. Ready or not, the next slide is on the way! Learn more here.

For the third year in a row, the fantastic team at TALKSHOE is helping to bring you the Podcast Movement Podcast Pavilion…in other words, RECORD YOUR PODCAST LIVE FROM PM19, and we’ll provide all the ingredients and tools necessary to prepare the recipe. Get ready to chew the fat!

Here’s what you need to know:

SCHEDULE
Live podcasting will take place:

Wednesday, August 14 from 9:00 am – 2:45 pm
Thursday, August 15 from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
Friday, August 16 from 9 am – 11:45 am

Each recording block will be 30 minutes in length.

SETUP
We will have two full-fledged recording stations, each complete with four ELECTROVOICE RE320microphones, headphones, and the fabulous RODE RODECASTER PRO to mix and record your show. And did we mention the gear used during recording will be raffled off to a few lucky winners who record their show at the pavilion?

WHAT TO BRING
Each podcaster should bring a blank microSD card to store your recorded episode. Anything over 1GB will work!

BEST PRACTICES

• ARRIVE 15 MINUTES EARLY.
• Notify your guest(s) to arrive early.
• Have your SD card ready.
• Wear something appropriate for your video broadcast.
• Once again, we’ll have a pro audio engineer at the helm, making sure you are ready to rock, with additional assistance from the good folks at TalkShoe. You will get a visual cue that 2 minutes of recording is left so that you can wrap it up like a professional broadcaster (i.e., on time)!

Guy is the host of NPR’s How I Built This and the TED Radio Hour. On his newest show on Luminary, Wisdom From the Top, he talks to great leaders from C-suites, government and nonprofits about their stories of crisis, failure, turnaround and triumph.  In this session, Guy and a special guest will share their “wisdom from the top” journey for the podcast industry.

Guy will be a part of our closing keynote sessions on Friday afternoon, August 16th. Also a part of the closing keynotes will be Earlonne Woods and Nigel Poor from Ear Hustle, along with a very special guest of their own (stay tuned).

Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest is an annual American hot dog competitive eating competition held on the 4th of July at Coney Island in a neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City. The defending men’s champion is Joey Chestnut, who ate 74 hot dogs in 10 minutes in the 2018 contest. Competitive eating contests can be disgusting, but similar to podcasting; they require a strategy and a bit of preparation in order to succeed. Podcasting can feel overwhelming. The process can sometimes feel like eating 74 hot dogs in 10 minutes. We encourage aspiring and existing podcasters to consider podcasting less of a competition and more of a long term strategy to prevent the overwhelm and heartburn. Joey Chestnut didn’t start as a champion. He spent several years competing against, chasing and losing to Japanese Eating Competitor Legend Takeru Kobayashi. However, each defeat inspired Joey to continue being bold, training and making improvements. He finally beat Kobayashi in 2007 eating 66 hotdogs (Kobayashi had 63). We are proud to finally bring to you the nearly complete schedule for this summer’s big event! With over 150 sessions, panels, workshops and keynotes, we will not even try to list them all here. You can view them all via the Conference Schedule page on the website. You can start marking your favorites now, and don’t forget to check in on the latest update of amazing speakers taking the stages!

If you’ve not yet registered, you may want to consider getting a pass that includes the Virtual Ticket when you do. As you know, it is impossible to attend all of the sessions, so the next best strategy is to plan which presentation you will attend in person, and which ones you will make plans to view later on with the Virtual Ticket! And if you can’t make it to Orlando, you can get the Virtual Ticket as a standalone pass!

In 2018, Podcast Movement launched a new scholarship program to give a deserving few new podcasters, who are not able to afford to attend on their own, the opportunity to win a scholarship to attend the full event in Orlando, and also act as brand ambassadors for PM19.

Greetings PM Family,

This week we show our appreciation to all of the fathers out there as we celebrate Father’s Day here in the US! We honestly believe and boast that our dads can out-podcast your dads!

Dads are Incredible

We have an incredible number of amazing fathers in this community. Some of them in the traditional sense, and others who “watch over the podcast community” with the care of one. We will acknowledge a few of them, discuss the PM19 Monetization Track, announce the iHeartPodcast Network party at Podcast Movement, review some industry/community updates and close with ”Carpe Diem”!

Podcast Movement has a great appreciation and respect for all parent figures. We understand that some mothers are pulling double duty as a parent, some dads are flying solo, and oftentimes there are other family members or friends play the role of the dad. We appreciate your contributions to your family!

iHeartPodcast Network Party at PM19 at Tin Roof Orlando!

Good dads are known for being reliable. You can always count on them to be there for you. The social gatherings at Podcast Movement have proven to do that as well. We are excited to partner with iHeart to bring you the biggest party of the year, possibly all time, at PM19 this summer!

When? Thursday, August 15 from 7 pm to 11 pm.

Where? Tin Roof Orlando

What to Expect? The biggest and the best party of the year! Right around the corner from Rosen Shingle Creek, and we’ll have busses getting you there and back safely!

Talk is cheap though. We subscribe to the “seeing is believing” philosophy. You can see for yourself in this video from the big party at PM18.

A Man named Marvin

I (Jared) was 10 years old when I last had the opportunity to speak with my father. Marvin loved broadcasting. He was big into ham radio, when that was a thing.

He had a masters degree, and taught communications at the university level. He interviewed presidents. He covered all of the top news stories as a journalist in various roles throughout his career in radio and television.

He was the General Manager for a small radio station in Montgomery, AL when he passed in 1989. I know that if my dad were still living that he would love podcasting, and the amazing opportunities now available in new media.

He had a great laugh. I remember him cracking up while watching the movie the Blues Brothers. He also liked movies like the Pink Panther. He was always learning and doing his best to help others.

I wish that I could talk to my dad and discuss things that are happening in my life. He would be so happy to see this amazing podcast community.

Unfortunately, I am not able to have these conversations with him now. I know that a number of you can relate to this. We’ve had many wonderful extended family members pass in our community.

Each day we have an opportunity to love our families, friends, podcast listeners and communities. Seize the day and make each moment count. If you still have the relationship and opportunity, don’t miss the chance to tell your father that you love him…and everyone else important to you in your life for that matter. And from a podcast perspective, we hope that you will continue to love your audiences, and continue to deliver your best to them.

PM19 Technical Track, NASA offers an awesome opportunity to PM19 attendees, New Speaker Announcements and Industry/Community Updates!

One of our all-time favorite movies is the Princess Bride. We don’t condone bullying, but when it comes to Peter Cook’s Impressive Clergyman, you can’t help but chuckle.

June has traditionally been the most popular month for weddings in the US. There are a number of reasons for this, ranging from traditions to folklore to etiquette (you can read some of that here if you like). June also brings breaks from school, and from dangerous winter weather, which helps guests make the trip from out of town to be in attendance.

And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a good celebration? Weddings are a great time to celebrate. Podcast Movement also happens to have a lot to celebrate this week. We plan to share more about the Technical Track at PM19, share an exciting offering that NASA has for a handful of PM attendees, and discuss some updates from our industry and community.

NASA Extends a Generous Invite to a Few PM19 Attendees

Our friends at NASA have offered to host some PM19 attendees at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center for a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility and one-on-one interviews with NASA researchers. It will be an epic, full-day event and take place right before conference.

Here are the event details so far:

Date: Monday, August 12

Time: TBA. It will be an all-day event, starting in the late morning and ending around 5 pm ET.

Location: NASA’s Kennedy Space Center

Number of participants: The max number of people is 20 to give the selected participants an even more exclusive experience.

Security: All participants will need to be cleared for access to the facility. The process takes ~14 days for U.S. citizens and ~30 days for non-U.S. citizens.

Applications: Applications from participants will be collected by the team at NASA, who will then extend invites to attend the event. NASA will open up applications this month.

Schedule: TBA. NASA will set aside some time in the schedule for podcasters to interact with their experts (perhaps some astronauts, too) and possibly record segments and interviews for your shows.
